With a menacing 4.5" dagger blade and comfortably large, impact-capable handle, the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder is a mean blade. Few folding tactical blades match its reach and penetration capabilities at this weight and price range. Downsides would be the goofy mystery steel (425 M) that Gerber forces upon us and the pivot-mounted, non-switchable pocket clip. But the rest is outstanding: fast deployment, solid lockup, strong and fold proof Interlock locking system, blackened SS clip that's stout and contoured to handle, and a useful sheath. While a dedicated thrust cutter (dagger) design, the Gerber Combat Folder could also serve in some limited utility tasks as well. But it's main function is to provide you with a deadly backup weapon. And, like mine, it can be made even more effective in this calling by some expert sharpening of the upper edge which is fully protected within the handle. This is another highly recommended folding knife for deploying, combat-engaged Allied troops. Despite the funky steel, I give the Combat Folder a 9 of 10 on my likability rating.

Nov 23, 2008 - Rex Applegat designed this one, after his popular fixed blade (I have a signed photo of him, lol like most woudl collect signed sports cards I like signed photos of people involved with the knife community) Anyway he was a very interestign man, and well respected...The man was a guru in close quaetrs combat during WWII...He sadly passed away a few years back...

Nov 23, 2008 - I've really been enjoying your videos, man. Please keep it up!!! I personally won't buy a Gerber knife because of the steel. It's the most important part of the knife after all.

Nov 23, 2008 - I had one, didnt really like it, why did they make it half serrated if it was strictly a combat knife, seems weird, also, I've gotten to where I care about the steel, if I'm spending over thirty or forty bucks I expect to see some AUS8, S30V, something like that, otherwise why not just buy some chinese 440c piece of crap.

Nov 23, 2008 - I trained with this knife at basic & advanced knife defense classes. I don't trust the steel after having a Gerber multitool breaking on me!
sc00ny Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - To follow on from fattrucker01. 440c (originally a ball bearing steel)is a fantastic steel, superior in edge retention and hardenability to austenetic 8. 440a & b are NOT though, substandard steel. My advice to nconsumers who care abbout blade steel or need a knife that will keep a sharp edge:Be suspicious about anything labelled as '440'No such thing, it either has an A,B or C attached to it. If it's got a C and it's been hardened correctly it'll rock.PS I hate Gerber!

Nov 23, 2008 - I just received my Combat Folder today. Very exciting!Question: Is it a GOOD idea or a BAD idea to add a little 3-in-One oil to help it open easier (I have weaker hand muscles due to a broken neck)??????? Thank you Nutnfancy for ALL of your videos! -david, BC, Canada

Nov 23, 2008 - I didn't know Gerber used an odd steel in their knives, but I do know that every Gerber I've had has snapped...Either just the tip or the whole damn thing. I don't buy Gerber anymore because of this. It's a shame as they look very slick.

Nov 23, 2008 - NICE write up on the history of these knives in the latest Knife Magazine. It does say they designed the knife with the intent of the spine being sharpened. Good read, I highly recommend it.
